27 December 1883 - Mysterious box found in river

The Western Times newspaper reported that two fishermen had discovered a box containing women’s dresses and underclothing in the river near St David’s Station, Exeter. A police inquiry learnt that the box belonged to a Mrs Harris, who formerly lived at Winkleigh, and that she lost it on a train journey in August. The police guessed that someone stole the box and threw it in the river when they found that they couldn’t transport the contents.
